Eminent playback singer breathed his last on Friday September 25, at MGM Health care after battling the contagion for over 50 days. Popularly known as SPB, the 74-year old veteran singer breathed his last at around 1.04 pm. SPB, who captivated millions of hearts by his supreme singing talent for over five decades, was admitted to the MGM Healthcare here on August 5 after testing positive for COVID-19. The entire film fraternity joined the rest of the country to pay their condolences while many stars reacted to the sad news on Twitter.

Thala Ajith sent out a press note sharing the grief of fans across the world. And a few years later, the actor also shared screen space alongside the singer in “Ullasam” in which SPB played a father figure to his character. “If you liked music that crossed boundaries like language, you’d like him. I am among the crores of fans who have, over the years, admired and cherished the depth, majesty, and beauty of his voice and his musical prowess. I mourn the loss of Mr SPB. My deepest condolences to his family and music buffs. I pray God that he rests in peace,” the statement read.

SPB’s funeral is being held at a farmhouse in Thamaraipakkam village of Thiruvallore district. While several biggies in the film industry and the nation’s leaders paid their last respect to the late singer, a question popped up of why the reigning stars Ajith and Vijay haven’t paid homage to the legend. While actor Vijay paid his last respects today and extended his condolences to the bereaved family, the spotlight is now all over the “Ultimate star”.

In addition to being a legendary singer, SPB made a remarkable impression in many other fields, including as a voice-over artiste and as an actor. Actor Ajith who entered showbiz as a model and was spotted in TV commercials, played his first feature film in Telugu titled “Prema Pushthakam” and this opportunity was gernered under the recommendation of the late singer. Despite the fact that SPB has laid the foundation for Ajith’s illustrious career,  the actor neither visited SP Balasubramaniam while he was hospitalised nor attended his funeral. Lately, after the legend was laid at rest, Ajith has released a press statement experiencing his grievance over the demise of the veteran singer.

But however sources said that Ajith had enquired about SPB’s health over the call with SP Charan and Charan himself considering the pandemic situation advised the actor not to visit in person.
