Kamal Haasan welcomes court judgment on sterlite factory issue

The Madras High Court, in its judgment on Tuesday (Aug 18th) on a plea filed by Vedanta Limited challenging the Tamil Nadu government’s move to close its Sterlite Copper plant in Tuticorin, said the copper plant will stay closed.

On May 23rd — the 100th day of peaceful protests by the people of Tuticorin, violence broke out and police opened fire killing thirteen. Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper plant has been closed since then and they approached court to reopen. And when the case came for hearing now, the court has given the above said verdict.

Kamal Haasan welcomes court judgment on sterlite factory issue

Actor and politician Kamal Haasan welcomed the court’s verdict and said that it is justice for the lives lost. He took to his twitter and said in Tamil, which roughly translates as, “The Court’s decision to ban the sterlite factory is justice for the lives that were lost protesting it. As a brother of the people of Tuticorin, I felt the pain and loss watching them in close quarters. This is further proof that the voice of the people will always win.”
