Muttiah Muralitharan’s soon-to-be released biopic ‘800’ will feature Vijay Sethupathi portraying the Sri Lanka spinner’s role in. According to reports, the film is titled 800 and will be directed by MS Sripathy. The biopic will trace the struggles faced by the cricketer and his rise to popularity. The film is jointly produced by Movie Train Motion Pictures and Dar Motion Pictures.

The title ‘800’ is said to be a tribute to the number of wickets Muttiah Muralitharan has taken in Test cricket. Muttiah Muralitharan is the only cricketer to have taken 800 wickets in Tests, comfortably ahead of Australia legspinner Shane Warne, who has taken 708 wickets. Vijay Sethupathi, who is known as ‘Makkal Selvan’ to his legion of fans in the Tamil film industry, will reprise his role. The actor confirmed the news by tweeting a poster of the film and said that he was honoured to be a part of this landmark project. But ever since the actor has announced the big news, several people have been protesting that the actor shouldn’t feature in this film and many have been questioning Vijay Sethupathi as to how he can act in a film about a Sri Lankan who has massacred millions of Tamils. Following this director Seenu Ramasamy has requested the actor to reconsider his decision and wrote, “The heart of Vijay Sethupathi belongs to the Tamilians of the world. Yathum Ure Yavarum Kelir starring Vijay Sethupathi is the evidence. A cure for the Eelam-Tamil soul. Kiss on the palm. Makkal Selva, You are ours Tamilians pride and property. Why do we need this? Change? ”
