The rape and murder of a 7-year-old girl named Jayapriya in Pudukottai by three men have sent shockwaves throughout the state and has created massive outrage all over. Given how the grievance is just beyond the regular scope of any normal crimes, netizens and celebrities are struck with a mixture of numbness and indignation. They demand immediate justice, and adding to this chorus are several celebrities inlcuding Varalaxmi, Sai Pallavi, Lakshmi Ramakrishnan and Aathmika. Their voices on social media are all unanimous: to hell with the perpetrators. And pass laws to induce the fear of god on any individual who even think about such acts.

The ever vocal Varalaxmi Sarathkumar has now uploaded a video demanding chief minister Edappadi K. Palanisami to pass laws that would make rape punishable by death. She feels this would be the only way to instill fear in rapists. Otherwise, she says that they ‘go to jail for rape, hang around, and then eventually come out to repeat the same acts.’

Disgusted and disheartened by the heinous crime meted out to a child, director Ratnakumar, known for his films like Aadai, Meyadha Maan and Vijay’s upcoming Master, made a poignant tweet questioning the safety of his two daughters. The tweet is in Tamil and it roughly translates to: “That child was happily playing by wearing a safety mask. You rogues raped and killed her. I feel shaky when I think of my two daughters who have to grow up in this shameful world.”
